Maths

At Fitzroy North Primary School, we teach mathematics in a clear and structured way so that every child can feel confident and successful. We use an explicit teaching approach, where teachers clearly explain new ideas, model thinking step by step, and provide guided practice to support learning. Guided by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, our lessons are designed to build strong conceptual understanding alongside essential mathematical skills, supporting all students to develop confidence and independence in their learning.

We recognise that every child learns differently, so our mathematics teaching is carefully differentiated to meet students at their point of need. Teachers use ongoing assessment and a range of student data to inform their planning and instruction, ensuring teaching is responsive and targeted to individual learning needs. This includes providing additional support through small group intervention, both within the classroom and through targeted sessions outside the classroom when required. At the same time, students who demonstrate strong understanding are extended through enrichment opportunities that challenge their thinking, including programs such as Maths Explorer in Years 3/4 and Maths Olympiad in Years 5/6.

Each term, students also complete a mathematics learning task that is shared with families. These tasks provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate their learning in a meaningful way, offering families a clear snapshot of their child’s progress and understanding in mathematics.
